I’ve seen businesses approach their bank with a simple question:
“How much can we borrow?”
I think the better questions come first:
→ What are we trying to achieve?
→ What will the investment generate?
→ What will it do to EBITDA?
→ What will it do to cash flow?
→ How much capital do we actually need?
→ What happens if growth is slower than expected?
→ What is the right funding structure?
→ And, importantly, should we borrow at all?
Finance should not be the starting point.
The business strategy should come first.
The role of a good adviser is to connect the two:
Strategy → Performance → Capital → Funding → Growth
This is where I believe my experience as a Chartered Accountant, commercial finance executive, corporate adviser and finance broker brings a different perspective.
I don’t just want to know whether a lender will approve the transaction.
I want to understand why the business needs the capital, what it is expected to achieve, and whether the proposed funding supports the longer-term strategy.
Because getting the finance is only part of the decision.
Getting the decision right is the bigger opportunity.
That is the thinking behind Advanced Finance Group.
